Kid-Friendly Eatery: Coogee Pavilion
Address: 169 Dolphin St, Coogee NSW 2034
If you're looking for a venue that blends seaside dining with family-friendly vibes, Coogee Pavilion—fondly known as "The Pav"—offers a little bit of everything. From a dedicated kids' play area to a menu that caters to little ones, it's easy to see why this spot is so popular with parents in the Eastern Suburbs. But does it live up to the hype? Or is it (as one of my friends from my first mother’s group insisted) completely overrated?
The Vibe
The Pav is actually three venues in one building (a different venue on each floor). There’s a rooftop bar on the top, and a fine dining restaurant on the second level. However, the ground floor of The Pav is where it’s at.
The main part of the floor is a typical restaurant or pub-style set up with plenty of tables of varying sizes and shapes and a bunch of different food stations where you can see your meal being made (like a woodfire pizza oven in the centre). The outdoor area is also utilised in summer with tables and umbrellas that overlook Coogee Beach.
However, the back of the ground floor is a sprawling kids space with various zones to suit different moods. Dining tables and chairs are swapped for couches around coffee tables. On weekends, these coveted spots can fill up fast, but weekdays are much more relaxed, making it a go-to for mums and bubs groups.
There’s a kids play area, table tennis tables and a screening room under the stairs playing cartoons and kids' movies. A duplo station, a noughts and crosses wall game, and a giant scrabble board round out the fun. Some wear and tear is noticeable—the magnets on the scrabble tiles barely stick, and the soft play equipment in the kids’ area is looking a bit tired. However, still plenty of opportunity for play and fun!
The Play Area
The kids’ play area is a great feature. It features artificial grass, a cubby house, soft blocks, and a ledge that helps corral smaller toddlers. Crawlers and more adventurous babies can make their way out, but it’s still a thoughtful design for supervising parents.
There’s also a table for coloring and crafts (ask for a kids’ menu—it sometimes doubles as a coloring sheet), plus the ever-popular table tennis tables. Just be prepared to retrieve ping pong balls from under couches or nearby tables!
The Food
The menu is family-friendly, offering everything from wood-fired pizzas to kids’ meals like nuggets or fish and chips. Babychinos are a budget-friendly $1 (but don’t expect a marshmallow). You can order food via QR codes at the table, and the staff will bring it out to you—a handy feature when you’ve got little ones in tow.
As for the coffee, it’s... fine. Not amazing, but serviceable for a caffeine fix.
Facilities
Good news: there are toilets on-site! The disabled toilet includes a change table (although it’s a little cramped in there). However, there isn’t a dedicated parents’ room or change table, so plan accordingly.
The Verdict
Coogee Pavilion is a fantastic option for a family outing, particularly on a weekday when it’s less crowded. The variety of activities means kids are entertained, and the diverse seating options offer something for everyone. While some elements of the play area and games are showing their age, the setup still creates a welcoming space for kids and parents alike.
If you’re looking for an easy, breezy outing with a mix of good food and kid-friendly fun, The Pav should be on your list. Just don’t expect barista-level coffee or snagging a couch on a busy Saturday without a little patience.
Pro Tips:
Arrive early on weekends to claim a comfy spot.
Bring your own coloring supplies if the kids' menu isn’t stocked with coloring sheets that day.
Keep an eye on the table tennis balls—they have a habit of going rogue!
Would we return? Definitely, especially for the $1 babychinos and beachside location. But if you're particular about your coffee or need pristine play equipment, manage your expectations accordingly.
