One of the best things about this zoo is how central and accessible it is. Whether you take the train, bus, light rail, or ferry, it’s a short walk from most public transport stops. If you’re driving, they offer discounted parking at nearby car parks — check the website for up-to-date offers.
2. You Actually See the Animals
One of my biggest frustrations at bigger zoos is leaving with barely a glimpse of anything. That wasn’t the case here. We saw around 90% of the animals, and it’s clear the layout is designed to give great visibility without disrupting the animals' comfort. You get multiple viewing angles and cleverly positioned feeding spots that encourage animals to stay in sight.
3. Designed for Kids
There are so many interactive features dotted throughout the space — from sensory buttons and animal sounds to crawl tunnels and climbing statues. Near the café, there’s even a little corner with books and colouring pages to give little ones a quiet moment before continuing.
4. It Feels Safe
The entire zoo follows a one-way walking path, so you’re never doubling back or navigating a maze of trails. As a mum of a toddler who isn’t keen on the pram right now, this setup made life so much easier — I could always see where she was, and there weren’t endless paths for her to dart down.

Tricky Tongues and Treetops
Our first animal sighting was an echidna, which I’d never seen in real life before. Opposite was a tree kangaroo, visible from both the inside area and the outside path.
Devil’s Den
We didn’t spot the Tasmanian devil, which wasn’t surprising given they’re nocturnal. But the enclosure had a kid-friendly tunnel that offered a different view — a hit with the little ones.
Reptile Zone
This area had snakes and lizards up close, and the layout was toddler-friendly. My 18-month-old could see into the enclosures easily thanks to the step bars placed underneath. There were also sound buttons that played snake noises, adding another layer of interaction.
Wallaby Cliffs
This was a big open space with wallabies and a huge wombat who was happily munching away. You could really take your time here. There were also benches to sit, and more climbing statues for kids.
Kangaroo Walkabout
One of the highlights — no glass barriers, just you and the kangaroos in an open space. The animals were relaxed, and it felt more like walking through a paddock than a traditional zoo exhibit.
Platypus Pool
A personal first for me — I finally spotted a platypus, which is rare in most zoo settings. The layout made it easy to see them swimming around.
Nightfall
A dimmed area designed to mimic nighttime, complete with starry lights on the ceiling. The calm lighting made it easy to spot nocturnal animals while keeping the mood peaceful.
Crocodile Billabong
A favourite for older kids, with a large crocodile enclosure, educational displays, and a crawl space where kids can pop up into a dome inside the tank — very cool.
Koala Rooftop
This area doubles as a rest stop with a café, lift access for prams, and shaded seating. The koalas were fully out in the open, snoozing in gum trees, and there’s a great view over the kangaroo walkabout below.

Yes — the zoo has been designed with small children in mind. Most enclosures have clear viewing lines, and even toddlers can see animals without needing to be lifted constantly.

You can comfortably explore the whole zoo in 90 minutes, which is perfect for little attention spans. If you’re short on time, you could do it in under an hour, though we recommend taking it slow.
Is it suitable for toddlers?
Absolutely. It’s compact, interactive, and mostly undercover — ideal for rainy days or very hot weather. It’s one of the best options for indoor activities with toddlers in Sydney.
Are the bathrooms family-friendly?
Yes — there are change tables available at both the entrance and near the Koala Rooftop café.
Should I bring snacks?
Yes, always. The café is located halfway through, so it’s a good idea to bring some snacks for the early stages of your visit.
Best time to go?
We always recommend the first time slot (10am). Animals are more active, and crowds are minimal. The kangaroo walkabout opens at 10:30am, so plan to swing back around for that one if you arrive early.
Are there places to eat around WILD LIFE Zoo Sydney?
Yes as its located in Darling Harbour there is plenty of food options just outside the zoo. If you go mid week they have lots of lunch specials and kid friendly options. If you keep walking down the harbour (around a 5 minute walk) you can find take out options like McDonalds, Betty Burgers and Guzman Y Gomez.
