Day Out in Watson’s Bay
The next time Sydney turns the weekday weather ON and the blue sky is impossibly clear, grab your kids and head over to Watsons Bay.
Eastern Suburbs locals are well aware of the bustling nature of Watsons Bay beach and ferry wharf on weekends. Finding a parking spot during summer weekends can be quite a challenge! However, weekdays offer a more relaxed experience with fewer crowds, making parking easier and providing a more peaceful, kid-friendly environment. Look for parking on the side streets around Watsons Bay or in designated parking areas, which are typically less crowded during weekdays.
Watsons Bay Library
Start your day at the charming Watsons Bay Library, located next to the Watsons Bay Tea Garden. Visit on a Tuesday or Thursday morning, as the library opens only in the afternoon on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
The library's fenced perimeter allows for a worry-free experience while toddlers play on the small grassy area out front. Enjoy Storytime for 3-5 year olds at 10:30am on Tuesdays during NSW School Terms, or bring your little ones to Rhyme Time for 0-2 year olds at 10am and 10:30am on Thursdays.
Cafe: The Baithouse in the Tea Garden
After the library, treat yourself to a coffee (and a babyccino or two) at The Baithouse in the Tea Garden, the café adjoining the library. The café offers two high chairs and some toys to keep the kids entertained.
For convenience, public toilets with baby change tables are located around the side of the café.
Robertson Park and Playground
Once you’re caffeinated, take a stroll to Robertson Park and Watsons Bay Beach, just about 100 meters down the road. Bring a ball to kick around on the grass, or let the kids explore the fenced playground located towards the back of the park.
The playground features equipment mainly suited for 6-10 year olds, with a few options for younger children, including a bucket swing, rocker, and a small pirate ship for imaginative play. The park’s shade cloths and surrounding trees ensure comfortable play even closer to midday. Public toilets and a water fountain are conveniently located near the playground.
Watsons Bay Beach
Head to the beach to build sandcastles or cool off with a splash in the water. If you have a little ship enthusiast, they’ll love watching the ferries come in and out of the wharf. And of course, there are always plenty of seagulls to watch (or chase)!
If you’re in the mood, grab some takeaway fish and chips from the nearby Doyles On The Wharf Takeaway and enjoy your meal on the sand.
Or . . . Make It an Afternoon Adventure!
As daylight extends towards summer, why not pack a picnic and have dinner on the beach? Combine it with a swim or a play in the park or playground beforehand for a perfect evening out.
If you have a 6-12 year old who loves building or crafting, book them into Watsons Bay Library’s Mini Makers at 4pm on the first Wednesday of every month (during term time). Afterward, head across the road to Watsons Bay Baths, an enclosed tidal pool with floating pontoons extending into the water.
All in all, Watsons Bay is a gorgeous location to spend a few hours with your little ones.
